By the 19th century the island prospered as a busy whaling port. When the demand for whale oil ended around 1870, Martha’s Vineyard floundered in economic depression for a while before reemerging as a summer resort. Today, rock stars, movie directors and U.S. presidents are among the 100,000 people who summer here each year. Martha’s Vineyard is comprised of six towns, each with a distinct personality as defined by its architecture, ocean views and dramatic terrain.
The "Up-Island" communities of Aquinnah, Chilmark and West Tisbury offer a rural, quiet pace. The “Down-Island” towns of Edgartown, Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven are more populated and have more activity. There are many public beaches and there are also six restricted beaches limited to town residents and renters.
Martha's Vineyard can be accessed by ferry boat from New Bedford or Woods Hole on Cape Cod. Commercial airlines service Martha's Vineyard as well. Once here, a regional bus system and 50 miles of bike paths make getting around easy.
