Oak Bluffs Vacation Rentals - Martha's Vineyard

In 1835 Methodist church groups started coming to Oak Bluffs for summer gospel revivals. By the 1850s, services were drawing up to 12,000 people and a small city of tents had sprouted up in Oak Bluffs' pastures and groves. The tents gave way to small cottages and in 1879 the main meeting tent was replaced by a steel tabernacle, which still stands today. By the end of the 1870s there were over 1,000 cottages, famous today for their fanciful and elaborate Victorian design. The place once called Cottage City was renamed Oak Bluffs in the late 19th century. There is a public beach in town and the John Sylvia State Beach runs between Oak Bluffs and Edgartown.
